Store-bought popcorn – whether pre-made or in its own cooking sachet – is pretty expensive compared to the rock-bottom price of the actual corn itself. All you’re really paying extra for is the fancy packaging and the dubious, invariably unhealthy added ingredients, but the only other option is to cook it in a pan, right?
Wrong! In fact, you can make delicious, totally homemade popcorn in your microwave using just a simple paper bag. Not only will it be cheaper, lacking in additives, and missing the mess and hassle of cooking in a pan, using the paper bag method allows you to flavour your popcorn to your own unique tastes.
So, how do you make it? Firstly, ensure that you use a paper bag which is completely plain, with no ink used to design it. You should also make sure that it is completely free of any other organic matter, including any caked-on food. A standard sized bag is absolutely perfect.
Now, add about a quarter cup of popcorn kernels. These can be picked up for pennies at health food stores, organic food markets, and often at supermarkets. Butter and other similar toppings can be added once the popcorn is cooked, but you should add a teaspoon of oil and a small amount of salt prior to popping. Now can also be the time to experiment with different seasonings. There’s really no wrong answer here, so feel free to get creative. Cinnamon, vanilla, and paprika are all interesting options.
Next, fold over the top of the bag to make sure the kernels don’t spill out, and give it a shake to ensure that everything is evenly mixed together. All you have to do now is put your bag into the microwave for about 2 minutes, or until there are more than 2 seconds between pops. Be careful taking the popcorn out of the microwave – the bag may be very hot.
Empty into a bowl and add any extra flavouring you desire. Finally, put your feet up, turn on your favourite film, and eat your mouth-watering and 100% natural homemade popcorn.
