As a mum of two young children, I know the importance of a family-friendly bathroom. Sometimes bathing my little ones can be a real struggle, especially if bath time isn’t appealing to them. However, my secret weapon is my bathroom. It’s a fun place, which despite being a little bit ‘funny’ about bath time, my kids love spending time in.
I think there are two reasons for this; one, it’s a bright, colourful place, two, it has lots of fun toys to play with. On days when my children aren’t keen on having their nightly bath, the fact that they like the bathroom is a huge help for me.
However, this didn’t use to be the case. Up until a few months ago, my bathroom was just a drab, dreary, adult place, somewhere that my kids weren’t keen on at all. This is why I made the decision to give my bathroom a new look and feel, turning it into somewhere that my kids would love spending time in.
Here’s how I went about creating a family-friendly bathroom that my children love:
Add colour
Kids love colour; all mums know that. But, that doesn’t mean that you should decorate your bathroom in bright, primary colours.
If you want to create somewhere that is suitable for both adults and children, opt for slightly paler colours. The best shades to choose are pastel blue, lemon, and lavender, as these are popular with both adults and children.
Top tip: Make sure that whatever colour paint you use, that you opt for a brand that is bathroom safe. To make your bathroom extra child-friendly, opt for paint that can be easily wiped clean.
Have lots of storage
One of the main reasons kids enjoy bath time is because they have special bath toys to play with. From swimming Barbie dolls to rubber ducks and boats, most children have lots of bath toys – I know my girls do.
While bath toys are great for keeping the kids occupied while in the bath, they can make your bathroom a mess if you lack storage space. That’s why it’s crucial that you ensure that you either have built-in storage or a crate for storing your little one’s bath toys in.
Invest in warm, cosy towels
One thing that puts kids and adults alike off of taking a bath is being cold when getting out. This is why it’s important that you invest in some super soft, cosy bath towels. You can pick up lovely towels from specialist sites, like http://www.richardhaworth.co.uk/, at affordable prices. You could also get some cute bath time dressing gowns for your little ones, to keep them extra cosy after bath time.
Top tip: Make sure that the towels you invest in are of a high-quality and easy to wash. With kids about, things get dirty incredibly quickly, so everything must be easy to clean.
Make the bathroom accessible
When children get to a certain age, they like to have a little bit of independence. They like to go to the toilet on their own and wash their hands by themselves, but many kids are too small to be able to do these things.
That’s why it’s so important that you make your bathroom accessible and easy to use for your children. You can do this by investing in a child step for them, to use to get on and off the toilet and to reach the sink to wash their hands.
By following the tips and ideas in this simple guide, you can create the perfect family-friendly bathroom. Somewhere that both you and your children will love, and will enjoy spending time in.
